[SG Tapes & Films] An Innovative Alternative to Heat-Strengthened Glass: Introducing ‘Chemically Strengthened Glass’ to the Australian Market

The architectural market is constantly evolving. Today’s modern buildings demand higher structural stability alongside flawless visual quality, driving the need for continuous innovation in building materials.

SG Tapes & Films, which has long provided perfect surface protection solutions within the building envelope industry—supported by our South Korean headquarters, SG Chem—is now taking a new leap forward to meet these market demands.

Through a strategic partnership with glass specialists NAVUTEC, we are proud to introduce Chemically Strengthened Glass to the Australian market as a groundbreaking alternative to traditional Heat-Strengthened Glass.

💡 Why ‘Chemically Strengthened Glass’? (Core Strengths)

Chemically Strengthened Glass overcomes the processing limitations of traditional glass, offering next-generation performance and flexibility for architectural applications.

  • Post-Strengthening Processing (Biggest Advantage): Unlike fully tempered glass, chemically strengthened glass can be cut, drilled, and edge-ground after the strengthening process. This maximizes inventory management efficiency and provides immense flexibility for custom on-site fabrication.

  • Exceptional Strength: It boasts a strength approximately 9 times greater than standard annealed glass and 2 times greater than traditional heat-strengthened glass.

  • Versatile Thickness Range: Can be strengthened across a wide range of thicknesses, from 0.1mm ultra-thin glass to 19mm thick structural glass, expanding design possibilities.

  • Flawless Flatness and Optical Quality: Processed at an optimized temperature of around 450℃, it minimizes the distortion typically caused by thermal processing. There is absolutely no surface warping or distortion after strengthening.

  • Zero Spontaneous Breakage: It is completely free from spontaneous breakage issues caused by Nickel Sulfide (NiS) inclusions. Upon impact, its breakage pattern is similar to that of annealed or heat-strengthened glass, rather than shattering into tiny pieces like fully tempered glass, ensuring safe fracture behavior.

  • Stable Mass Production: Supported by a production capacity of approximately 900,000㎡ per year, seamlessly accommodating the production of large-scale and curved glass.

🏢 Proven Applications Across Various Industries

Having already proven its performance and reliability in the South Korean market, Chemically Strengthened Glass is widely utilized not only in architecture but across diverse industries:

  • Architecture & Exteriors: High-rise curtain walls, balcony balustrades and glass fences, structural glass floors, and soundproof walls.

  • Industrial & Specialty Glass: Automotive and industrial glass, solar panel cover glass.

  • Home Appliances & Displays: Exteriors for home appliances, LED TV cover glass.

  • High-Performance Windows: Unitized Insulated Glass Units (IGU) and laminated glass assemblies.

🤝 More Than a Product Addition: A ‘Strategic Expansion’

Our collaboration with NAVUTEC represents more than just a new product launch for SG Tapes & Films.

While SG Chem Australia has traditionally acted as a reliable shield—protecting the quality of building materials from manufacturing to installation through advanced ‘surface protection technology’—we are now expanding our role. We are stepping up as a partner that enhances the core value of buildings starting from the ‘performance material’ stage.

By introducing Chemically Strengthened Glass, already proven in numerous architectural and industrial projects in Korea, to the Australian market, we aim to actively support local architects and builders in achieving more flexible designs and securing stable quality. Moving forward, SG Tapes & Films will continue to set new standards in the building envelope industry by bridging high-performance architectural materials with unrivaled quality control technology.
