Verified Performance on Australian Color-Coated Steel
SGO-173TV — Strong During Processing, Clean and Easy to Remove After UV Exposure
Color-coated steel is widely used in the Australian construction market, particularly for fencing, roofing, cladding, and exterior architectural applications.
Because these products move through processing → transport → outdoor storage → on-site installation, they are continuously exposed to strong sunlight and fluctuating temperatures.
For this reason, the performance of a surface protection film directly affects the final quality of the product.
To validate performance under real environmental conditions, SG Tapes & Films conducted a 6-week outdoor exposure test on two products:
-
SGO-173TV (UV-curable protection film suitable for Pre-painted Metal)
-
SGO-453A (long-used protection film for Pre-painted Metal processing)
The test used beige and grey color-coated steel panels commonly found in the Australian market, exposing both films to direct sunlight for six consecutive weeks.
The objective was to evaluate:
-
Adhesion stability during processing and handling
-
Adhesion changes under strong UV exposure
-
Lifting or deformation
-
Surface cleanliness and ease of removal after exposure
1. Product Overview — Different Design Purposes
▶ SGO-453A
-
A long-used protection film for Pre-painted Metal (PPM)
-
Suitable for common PPM processing steps such as slitting, bending, stamping, and roll forming
-
Designed for protection during manufacturing, fabrication, and logistics
▶ SGO-173TV
-
A UV-curable protection film suitable for Pre-painted Metal
-
Engineered to maintain strong adhesion throughout the operational workflow:
-
during processing (slitting, bending, stamping, roll forming)
-
during handling, transport, and temporary outdoor storage
-
after installation when the finished product is exposed to sunlight
-
-
Features high initial adhesion (210/170 gf per 25 mm), providing excellent stability throughout metal processing and transportation
-
After outdoor UV exposure, adhesion intentionally decreases, allowing the film to be removed smoothly and easily by hand
-
In essence,
173TV stays firmly in place when protection is needed and releases cleanly when removal is required.
2. Test Conditions — Real Outdoor Exposure in Australia
-
Substrates: Widely used beige and grey color-coated steel panels
-
Method:
-
Films were applied under controlled pressure
-
Samples were placed outdoors for 6 continuous weeks under direct sunlight
-
-
Evaluation items:
Adhesion change, lifting, film condition, residue or surface contamination
Both products were removed without any residue or staining, confirming adequate basic surface protection.
However, their adhesion behavior diverged significantly.
3. Results — Adhesion Trend Highlights the Advantage of 173TV
▶ SGO-453A — Adhesion Increases With Sunlight Exposure
This behavior is typical for conventional (non-UV-curable) protection films.
• Beige Panel
-
Initial: 113 gf/25 mm
-
After 6 weeks: 180 gf/25 mm
→ Approx. +59% increase
• Grey Panel
-
Initial: 155 gf/25 mm
-
After 6 weeks: 200 gf/25 mm
→ Approx. +29% increase
➡ The longer SGO-453A is exposed to sunlight, the more its adhesion increases,
resulting in a progressively stronger bond over time.

▶ SGO-173TV — Adhesion Drops After UV Exposure and Remains Stable
173TV is designed to maintain strong adhesion during production and logistics,
then reduce adhesion only after extended outdoor UV exposure to ensure effortless removal on-site.
The test results clearly validated this mechanism.
• Beige Panel
-
Initial: 210 gf/25 mm
-
After 6 weeks: 63 gf/25 mm
→ Approx. –70% decrease
• Grey Panel
-
Initial: 170 gf/25 mm
-
After 6 weeks: 65 gf/25 mm
→ Approx. –62% decrease
Unlike SGO-453A—whose adhesion steadily increases under prolonged sunlight—
SGO-173TV shows a clear reduction in adhesion after UV exposure and then maintains this lower level in a stable and predictable manner.
This controlled decrease is critical for enabling clean, residue-free, one-hand removal
even after weeks of strong outdoor exposure.

4. Why SGO-173TV Fits the Australian Color-Coated Steel Market
Color-coated steel products in Australia typically undergo:
-
Processing (slitting, bending, stamping, roll forming)
-
Transport and outdoor storage
-
On-site installation
-
Continued outdoor UV exposure
-
Final removal of the protection film
173TV was developed to support this entire workflow.
✔ During Processing
High initial adhesion prevents lifting or shifting
✔ During Transport & Temporary Storage
Stable bonding ensures reliable protection
✔ After Installation
Withstands strong UV and heat without surface contamination
✔ At Final Removal
Adhesion decreased by 62–70% →
film can be removed smoothly and easily by hand, leaving no residue
5. Conclusion — A UV-Curable Protection Solution Proven in Real Outdoor Conditions
The 6-week exposure test clearly shows:
-
Both films provided clean, residue-free removal
-
But adhesion trends were fundamentally different:
-
SGO-453A: +29% to +59% increase
-
SGO-173TV: –62% to –70% decrease
-
-
173TV:
-
Strong and stable during processing and logistics
-
Maintains protection after installation
-
Becomes easy to remove after UV exposure
-
SGO-173TV is a UV-curable protection film optimized for the outdoor conditions and installation practices of the Australian color-coated steel market.
